Film critic Bill Nichols once wrote that there are three major types of film writing: The film review as a decision making aide for movie-goers, academic critical essays, and a dialogue among viewers.

With The Seventh Art, I hope to accomplish all three.  I will write about new films when I see them and old ones when I rewatch them.  I hope to write reviews that satisfy all three criteria.

I will write reviews that will first cover the basics, such as plot synopsis, the director, and actors, while giving my opinion on certain aspects of the movie.  What worked and what didn't.  This first part of my reviews will be spoiler-free.  Then I'll move on to spoilers and discuss specific moments or plot details from the films.  Feel free to disagree with me and post your opinions in the comments, as this is just my opinion, and you may have yours.

I will also facilitate dialogue by writing about whatever I see fit that has to do with film or TV.  This will most likely be news from the world of film, such as casting announcements, directing projects by my favorite helmers, and anything else I'm interested in.  Again, commenting is the whole idea here, so we can discuss ideas and opinions critically.

Now that the structure of my writings is out of the way, I'll tell you why it's called The Seventh Art.  Cinema is sometimes referred to as The Seventh Art because it encompasses all other art forms: architecture, sculpture, painting, music, dance, and poetry.  It is, in my opinion, the superior art form.

Films transport us to other worlds, whether it be a prison, an island, an airplane, or Middle Earth.  They tell a unique story that we can emotionally connect with more effectively than any other medium.  I love watching films, making them, and writing about them.  Now, I will try to impart onto you my thoughts and feelings on motion pictures.  You may agree, or disagree, but most of all, I hope you learn something.
